 Welcome to WDMH Minimize

Located in the village of Winchester, about forty kilometers south of Ottawa, Winchester District Memorial Hospital has been serving the people of Winchester and surrounding communities for more than sixty years. Family Medicine has been the cornerstone of health service at WDMH since its opening in 1948, and today, the Hospital remains committed to delivering first-rate care for its patients. Beyond the context of local healthcare delivery, WDMH is also proud of its status as a teaching hospital—providing invaluable training that the Family Physicians of tomorrow will retain and rely on throughout their careers. In partnership with the University of Ottawa, the Hospital offers Family Medicine residents the opportunity to work within a networked rural setting, with greater access to medical expertise and clinical services than in a typical rural environment.

WDMH is an award-winning facility that has undergone significant modernization in recent years. With the help of the community and its generous donors, 25,000 feet of floor space in the Hospital have been renovated, and an additional 90,000 square feet have been added. The renovations have resulted in a new Emergency Department, a new Ambulatory Care Department, a new Birthing Suite, and new Day Surgery and Operating Suites. While the facilities may have undergone a transformation, the Hospital’s commitment to provide local access to acute and complex continuing care services has not wavered. WDMH continues to achieve exceptional patient satisfaction ratings. As of August 2010, the services provided at the Hospital include the following:

·         24/7 Emergency Care
·         Hemodialysis
·         Ambulatory Care
·         Ophthalmology
·         General Surgery
·         Chemotherapy
·         Complex Continuing Care
·         Urology
·         Internal Medicine
·         Diagnostic Imaging
·         Physiotherapy
·         Ontario Breast Screening Program
·         Diabetes Education
·         Laboratory
·         Obstetrics/Gynecology

WDMH has an annual operating budget of $30.7 million and is governed by a seventeen-member Hospital Board. Currently, it has an estimated catchment population of 94,000 and referral population of 27,000 and growing. It maintains sixty-three beds: forty-six devoted to acute care and seventeen for complex continuing care. In all, WDMH employs 300 staff members, including 139 nurses, five midwives, and three dentists. The full complement of physicians with hospital privileges includes forty-one Family Physicians, including those in Emergency Medicine, and eighty-two specialists in the following practice areas:

·         Obstetrics/Gynecology
·         Geriatrics
·         Paediatrics
·         Psychiatry
·         Surgery
·         Anaesthesia
·         Ophthalmology
·         Physical Medicine
·         Nephrology
·         Laboratory Medicine
·         Urology
·         Internal Medicine
·         Diagnostic Imaging
·         Cardiology

The Hospital owes much of its growth and success to the community. The village of Winchester and the surrounding area are home to many of the Hospital’s employees. Although it is located just a short drive away from the Nation’s Capital, the community offers residents a serene, rural setting that is at once safe, vibrant, and welcoming. The area features several dining and recreation options, wonderful schools, and countless small businesses to serve the needs of residents. In short, a residency at WDMH means more than an on-site education. It means becoming part of a community.
